when i installed it on maverick, it said 'application requires at least Mac OS X version 10.10.5 (10.10.5), but is being run on 10.9.5,' so i don't know why it says it works on 10.9, because it doesn't. What's going on? Is there something wrong here that I don't see?

Simple answer - It is extraordinarily difficult to make a business case for development of a Mac version of a game (I'm talking in the AAA space mostly). Mac users are a small subset of the overall.

The original Sims game was not released a Mac. As such, it would not now be compatible.
Actually, a version of the original with the add-ons built in (magic, pets etc) was released for mac. I still own a physical copy…
